Charlie Thompson worked for the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) as a soil scientist for many years. He was eventually promoted to the position of the State Soil Scientist of Texas. During his time with the agency, Charlie was an advocate for professional development opportunities for soil scientists. He championed supervisory positions for soil scientists within the SCS. He was a founding member of PSSAT and a strong supporter of the scholarship. In 2023, the PSSAT membership voted to rename the scholarship in memory of Charlie Thompson.
